The Gutenberg Museum presents the pop-up exhibition "My favourite letter is the Q. Gerhard Steidl" on the occasion of the presentation of the Gutenberg Prize 2020 to the renowned printer and publisher Gerhard Steidl. In this exhibition, Steidl gets to the bottom of the secret of writing and the culture of writing: for him, too, the full beauty of letters in printed books or posters unfolds. The printer and publisher Gerhard Steidl loves exquisite fonts and pays careful attention to the typographic quality of all printed products that are produced by him. Steidl is particularly interested in the letter "Q", to which the exhibition is dedicated. The "Q", however, as a rare letter, seems to defy all economic constraints; in many typefaces it invites an almost lustful anarchy. Especially the so-called cauda, the tail of the capital letter, has inspired type designers to create countless variations. This exhibition shows the versal Q, placed in the center and all by itself: pictures of a letter.
